To run a stolen car check online click below if you are buying a used car and want to check its history. The service is called Car Check. Unlike many services Car Check also gives a finance protection insurance which can cover you if you buy the car and it is subsequently found to be subject to a finance agreement.

The Car Check service allows you to enter any UK vehicle registration number, and see basic free information confirming the make and model of the car.

You can then pay online by credit card and see a full report giving you the history of any used car.

If you buy a stolen car, the police have the power to take it away from you and return the car to the rightful owner. If the car has been stolen and an insurance company has paid the claim, then the car can become the property of the insurance company.

If you have taken out a loan to buy the car, then you may still have to pay off the loan even though you no longer have the car.

You will not get any compensation. Buying a car in good faith does not give you protection if the car was stolen.

You could try to take action against the seller, but if the car was stolen, then it is possible that the seller may not be easy to trace.
